About chronic hepatitis B and the liver

What is chronic hepatitis B?

Chronic hepatitis B (hep B) is caused by long-term infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Over time, chronic hepatitis B can lead to serious liver damage.
Hepatitis B is spread through contact with infected bodily fluids. It can often occur at birth. Babies infected with hepatitis B have about a 90% chance of developing lifelong infection.
Hepatitis B is not spread through food, water, or air. It is not spread through touching, kissing, sharing cups and utensils, or drinking alcohol.
What does the liver do?
