Understanding the safety of VEMLIDY:
long-term effects on bones and kidneys

Bone safety with VEMLIDY

Bone mineral density, or BMD, shows how strong your bones are. Decline in BMD or lower BMD means worse bone health. In Trials 108 and 110, BMD was measured in study participants when they entered the study and again at certain time intervals over 8 years. Larger negative numbers means a greater decline in BMD.

Studies showed that VEMLIDY had less impact on BMD compared to another medicine called tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, or TDF. After 2 years (Week 96), VEMLIDY had less impact on BMD than TDF.

Kidney safety with VEMLIDY

Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) measures how well your kidneys filter your blood. Filtration is an important process in the kidney, removing harmful wasts from your blood. In Trials 108 and 110, eGFR was measured in study participants when they entered the study and again at certain time intervals over 8 years. Larger negative numbers mean a greater decline in kidney function.

Studies showed that patients who took VEMLIDY experienced less impact on certain kidney lab tests than those who took TDF. After 2 years (Week 96), VEMLIDY had less impact on kidney function than TDF.

  • VEMLIDY may cause new or worsening kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your doctor should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys when starting and during treatment with VEMLIDY.
  • Your doctor may tell you to stop taking VEMLIDY if you develop new or worse kidney problems.

The long-term significance of these changes on the frequency of kidney side effects is not known.
